Physical fitness is an integral part of child’s upbringing. SSMS Sr. Sec. Model School, Janakpuri provides ample opportunity to its students by exposing them to various sports such as volley ball, basket ball, badminton, kho- kho, roller- skating, football, cricket and table- tennis. Special coaching is given in the national game – hockey. Active participation from the students in different sports has enabled them to participate at state as well as national level.

 

S. S. Mota Singh  Memorial Hockey Tournament

Initiated by late chairman sahib Sardar Prithipal Singh Ji Bhasin co- ordinated by late founder manager S. Arjun Singh Anand and then principal Mrs Gurcharan kaur and professionally organized by K.K. Guleria the first S.S. Mota Singh Memorial Hockey Tournament was organized for the first time year 1982 in the found memory of Sardar Sahib Sardar Mota Singh Ji, worthy father of Sardar Prithipal Singh Ji Bhasin.

In the first tournament it self 16 teams in the senior boys section participated. S.Pritam Singh Ji, than director of sports Delhi University presided over the inaugural match between host school and mira model school, Janakpuri ,N. Delhi. The tournament received very good response, from all quarters of Delhi.

It was in 1985 that the tournament was extended to Junior boys section and in 1990 girls hockey was also added in S.S.M.S memorial hockey tournament.

It may not be an exaggeration to say that the tournament is as popular as NEHRU Hockey tournament.

The prominent sports personalities who had been part of this tournament as chief guest either on opening or on the closing or prize distribution ceremony were Mr. Kapil Dev, Mrs. MargretAlva, Mrs Vidyastoks, Mr KPS Gill and many more.

The trophy of the first S.S.M.S memorial Hockey tournament arranged  a series of friendly hockey matches with a school from Singapore in  the year 1993.

Almost all the present hockey playing schools DPS, R.K Puram , BKR Modern School, Vasant Vihar, Bal Bharti Public Schools Noida and Pitam Pura. GHPS group of schools and many schools from Delhi NCR eg Sonipat, Ghaziabad and Faridabad also participated in the tournament. The event is eagerly awaited by most of the hockey playing schools.

Managing committee is very keen to ensure that the tournament runs successfully and the school is able to contribute by giving some of the best hockey players to the nation. The players are an asset to the nation as they participate at state and national levels.
